( opt-out )

Qrow's character arc deals with some heavy subjects, which I've detailed below.

  • Alcoholism: First and foremost, Qrow is a recovering alcoholic. For several seasons he's shown to be drinking on the regular, and more than once ends up blackout drunk. After he quits he's never shown to relapse. However, he does react with visible unease when offered alcohol and finds an excuse to leave the room immediately after. He's also shown supporting another character that is also a recovering alcoholic.

  • Mental Health: There's no official diagnosis, but Qrow exhibits some pretty clear signs of depression and anxiety, particularly the latter. Blaming himself for things going wrong, assuming the worst in any situation, being reluctant to take certain risks even if they're necessary, regularly attempting to deescalate arguments, and so on.

  • Self-Loathing: For a variety of reasons, Qrow really doesn't like himself. He talks down on himself a lot, to the point that even other characters chide him about deflecting compliments.

Final Note: Qrow's issues are handled in a pretty prosaic way compared to most fantasy media. It's not just that he has a drinking problem; his drinking was endangering the kids he was supposed to be looking after, forcing his nieces to take care of him, and driving a wedge between himself an his family. He's not just anxious and self-loathing; he actively isolates himself from his friends and family out of fear of harming them. And these issues don't exist in isolation from each other; he drinks to deal with the depression and anxiety, which hurts his family, which makes him dislike himself even more, which he then drinks to cope with.

Basically, be aware that any threads where any of the issues come up can be jarringly grounded.

If you would like to opt out of engaging with some of these subjects, or opt out of Qrow entirely, please reply here to let me know! All comments are screened.
